My Tech Journey - How I Began

My Tech Journey - How I Began

Writing this and realizing my journey started before I was even aware.

**THE SHORT VERSION**

Intro - I’ve always been in love with the sciences, particularly the life sciences. I’ve liked reading everything I could about nature and the human body. But thinking about it now, I liked tech too albeit on a smaller scale. I always loved the Awake! Magazines my uncle brought to our house as a child, I read through them and was fascinated by them. I distinctly remembered reading an issue talking about how doctors and scientists were using technology to invent machines and robots to aid in the treatment of illnesses and in surgery.

The Beginning - Let’s jump several years into the future. I am in my 2nd year in the university and realizing a growing interest in the Genetics, Molecular biology and Bio-technology. While reading articles on the subjects, I come across one that that writes about how machine learning and AI are bridging the gap between science and technology and how their application to the field of science and medicine could bridge the gap between science and technology and to several fields in science and medicine was the key to unlocking the secret of preserving health and the the genetic code.

I was hooked. This led me down a rabbit hole of articles and journals and also a growing realization that maybe, this was an excellent option for me, for my career in science.. I played around with it and later pushed it to the back of my head and half forgot about it. Fast-forward to my 4th and final year and working on my seminar on Genetics and I’m once again thrust into – the corridors of AI and Machine Learning. At the time, I hadn’t started looking deeply into ML & AI, it was still unexplored for me.

Flashpoint - 2020 begins its HD broadcast with COVID-19 and ASSU strike as headliners for the main event. I find myself with a lot of free time and rediscover after weeks of aimlessness, I once again rediscover machine learning through social media. Once again I started digging and realize the fundamentals required for me to advance in it. One of these fundamentals is Python language and Data Science and after some starts and stops, I began a slow shuffle towards what I now realize to be something I’m genuinely excited to be a part of: Becoming an expert in the field of Machine Learning and Incorporating Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence into my chosen field in biology and using this hybrid of science and tech to be a game changer in the fields of science and medicine.

Checkpoint - I am currently learning python programming and data science with via the Sololearn app, Udemy, Freecampcode, Udacity and YouTube. Data science also being a foundation in ML and AI. I am also grateful to the SheCodeAfrica community for providing me with resources and opportunities to aid me on my journey and other mentors for their invaluable advice and assistance.

On the side, I just started learning UI/UX with my sister via [figma.com] and she is also my tutor. I will say with pride and shame that she has made far more progress in her tech journey than I have. My journey beginning with python programming has also expanded my eyes and expanded my eyes to the world of Programming. I have also found myself wanting to explore and master several categories in tech like Backend and Frontend, Full stack, DevOps, Cyber Security and Cloud computing, and so much more. I do not know if this is where my journey will lead me, all I know is that Tech is my Future and it is definitely the road I will walk on and never step out of. So that’s the summary of it; My tech journey started out of a desire to explore the relationship between Human Biology and Technology and how it is already helping experts in advancement in research and medicine.

It's a hard journey ahead and still a lot of ways to go but I know I'll crush it. Good luck to anyone reading this on their journey and I wish them safe passage.
